Summer Festival

The 2022 summer festival explored reinvention - from transcriptions and arrangements of beloved classics, to rhapsodies and variations on themes of popular composers. Following an all-outdoor season in 2021, events returned to the intimacy of the historic Sembrich Studio and others remained outdoors on the lakeshore.

A Kind of September – An Evening with Kate Baldwin

For one night only, The Sembrich takes on the aura of an outdoor New York City supper club, a lakeside Feinstein’s 54 Below, with an exclusive performance by one of Broadway’s current-day stars, Kate Baldwin. Hailed by the NY Times as “the redheaded firecracker” and acclaimed for her roles in Hello Dolly!, Finian’s Rainbow, and Big Fish, Baldwin performs signature songs from her Broadway career, and shares personal anecdotes about how each song became part of her life.

Fellswater

Performing in a wide range of musical styles from traditional to modern, Fellswater brings energy and buoyancy to works drawn from the heritage of the Celtic world, in particular, from Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, Galicia, and Canada. The instrumentation of the diverse ensemble includes vocals, whistles, Irish flute, guitar, octave mandolin, violin, cello, nyckelharpa, Celtic harp, Scottish smallpipes, border pipes, acoustic bass guitar, and percussion.

Pianist Christopher Johnson presents an exciting program of virtuosic reimaginings, ranging from Rachmaninoff’s monumental Variations on a Theme by Corelli, Op. 42, to Beethoven’s charming 6 Variations on 'Nel cor piu non mi sento, Debussy’s delightful Children’s Corner Suite, and the dazzling transcription by Schulze-Evler of Johann Strauss’ On the Beautiful Blue Danube. Johnson sets the scene for an evening of keyboard enchantment with a sampling of etudes by Chopin.

My Fair Lady, Broadway’s Lover-Ly Musical Hit

Lerner and Loewe turned George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion into the unlikeliest and most profitable musical stage hit of its time. From the original production starring Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews up to the present, musical theater historian and New York University Professor John Kenrick returns to The Sembrich with a multimedia tribute to his favorite musical. In previous seasons, Kenrick has enthralled sold-out Sembrich audiences on topics ranging from Jerome Kern and operetta to Leonard Bernstein’s New York.

Revel in the exotic strains of the Brooklyn Nomads, a collective of musicians from different cultural and stylistic backgrounds, including Lebanon, Germany, Sudan, Turkey, Iran and Albania. With roots in Middle Eastern and Arabic traditions, the music of the ensemble includes global styles like Flamenco, Jazz, Balkan, Bluegrass, North & East African, European Classical, and more.

Bridge & Wolak Music & Comedy Duo: Bach To Benny Goodman

The “Victor Borges of the 21st Century,” this classy, virtuosic, and comedic accordion and clarinet duo performs music from Bach to Benny Goodman, including a joyful collection of well-known standards from the Baroque, classical, jazz, and folk repertoires. Selections include music by Bach, Handel, Saint-Saёns, Bechet, Goodman, and Hank Williams, integrating traditional acoustic instruments with 21st century digital technology.

Empire Wild is a genre-bending, crossover trio founded by Ken Kubota, Brandon Ilaw, and Mitch Lyon. Ken and Mitch bring all the cello has to offer, whether bowed, plucked, or chopped. Brandon can be found singing and playing anything he can get his hands on – often a cajon, sometimes a guitar or piano, maybe some ankle bells.

Spectacular Stradivarius: Elizabeth Pitcairn And The Red Violin

Celebrated violin virtuoso Elizabeth Pitcairn, President and Artistic Director of the Luzerne Music Center, joins with world renowned faculty players from the Center for an evening of violin showpieces and chamber music to benefit The Sembrich’s Studio Preservation Campaign.

For this elegant evening, Ms. Pitcairn will perform on one of the world’s most legendary instruments, the “Red Mendelssohn” Stradivarius violin of 1720.

An Englishman’s 4th

International concert pianist Simon Mulligan pays tribute to both sides of the pond in this unique Independence Day celebration featuring classics from both Europe and America. The program gets underway with concert paraphrases by Liszt and Simon himself of works by Verdi, Beethoven (the haunting second movement of his fifth piano concerto), Rachmaninoff (the infamous 18th Variation from his Paganini Rhapsody) and other orchestral favorites, imaginatively arranged by Simon for solo piano.

Reimagining The Classics: Breaking Operatic Traditions

Michael Capasso, American Opera impresario and General Director of New York City Opera, presents The Sembrich season’s keynote talk and shares his insights on some of his favorite works by Verdi and Puccini, exploring a variety of productions and performance practices of the past 150 years. Michael’s talk will be illuminated by several popular arias from the repertoire performed by soprano Kristin Sampson with pianist Michael Clement.

The Sembrich has been a venue for young artists to learn and perform since 1924. It served as Madame Sembrich’s vocal studio where she trained singers from The Juilliard School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music. On summer afternoons and evenings, students would present recitals for the public. We continue this tradition today with our annual showcase.
