The Sembrich Celebrates World Music Traditions in A Journey Around the Globe Featuring Fiddler Mari Black and Accordionist Cory Pesaturo
The Sembrich will celebrate world music traditions in A Journey Around the Globe, an afternoon performance featuring fiddler Mari Black and accordionist Cory Pesaturo on Wednesday, August 18 at 2:00 PM. The afternoon promises an unforgettable musical extravaganza, as the duo presents a diverse musical journey, featuring rhythmic jazz tunes, blazing klezmer horas, passionate tangos, playful American rags, driving Celtic reels, and more. Known throughout the country and around the world for their individual musical versatility and vivaciousness, Mari Black and Cory Pesaturo hold over 10 World and National championship titles between them.
“We are so excited to welcome Mari and Cory to The Sembrich,” says Director of Outreach Caleb Eick. “This concert is a perfect opportunity to explore new cultures and traditions with world-class musicians while enjoying the beautiful lakeside setting of The Sembrich Grounds!”
Mari Black burst onto the international stage when she became Scotland’s Glenfiddich Fiddle Champion, 2-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion, and 2-time Canadian Maritime Fiddle Champion, all within a 3-year period. Always eager to share her love of dance-driven music with audiences around the world, she has performed on five continents, playing everywhere from Celtic Festivals to Carnegie Hall and appearing on prominent radio including the BBC and NPR. Holding advanced degrees from the Yale School of Music and Columbia University, Mari is a passionate educator, teaching regularly at fiddle camps and workshops around the county.
Cory Pesaturo (“C Pez”) is the only person to ever win the trio of World Championships on Acoustic, Digital & Jazz Accordion, and is the only accordion graduate of New England Conservatory of Music. He has made four appearances at the White House starting at age 11, including a performance for a State Dinner which made him the youngest person to do so. Pesaturo is a Guinness World Record Holder for the longest accordion performance (which was sponsored by RedBull®) and has given two TED talks and two Google talks about his work to revolutionize the much-maligned instrument. He also teaches masterclasses on improvisation worldwide.
Tickets are $25 and are available online at TheSembrich.org/festival or by calling (518) 644-2431. The performance will be held outdoors on the lakeshore under a performance tent. This event is part of the Touba Family Foundation World Music Wednesday Series.
