Yaddo and Wiawaka’s Katrina Trask Comes to Life at The Sembrich’s Summer Festival

One of the regions most noted philanthropists comes to life in The Sembrich’s presentation of “The Fascinating Life of Katrina Trask” on Wednesday, June 22 at 2:00 PM. Best known as the founder of Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, American author and philanthropist Katrina Trask led an accomplished and intriguing life with many Lake George connections. This spirited presentation by literary dramatist Betty Spinelli conveys the “true essence” of a woman whose life was filled with tragedy, romance, and creativity.

“I’ve been interested in Katrina Trask since my first visit to Yaddo many years ago. When I retired and learned of her many Lake George connections, my interest turned to intrigue, and I began to research her background,” says researcher Betty Spinelli. “I discovered that while the popular lore about Katrina was usually factual, it didn’t really convey her ‘true essence.’ The desire to tell her full story was the drive behind this presentation. Not surprisingly, Katrina’s story continues to captivate. This past January, church bells in Saratoga rang to celebrate her life – 100 years after her death!”

Betty Spinelli has enjoyed two prior careers, one in academia and one in the corporate world. She holds two Master’s Degrees (one in Mathematics and another in Computer Science). After teaching high school mathematics in the Albany area and computer science at the University of Albany, Betty worked for Xerox Corporation where she retired as Director of International Data in 2004. Since her retirement, she has devoted much of her time volunteering for non-profit organizations.  Currently, Betty serves as a member of the Board of Directors of The Sembrich.

The studio talk will be followed by an elegant lakeside tea sponsored by Saratoga Tea and Honey. All funds raised at the event will support The Sembrich’s Studio Centennial Project, a special initiative that aims to restore and preserve the building for the next century. Work completed includes a new roof, wiring, lighting, HVAC, and many other critical upgrades.

Tickets are $50 and may be purchased online at TheSembrich.org/festival.

This event is generously sponsored by Bud and Toni Gates and Wiawaka Center for Women.
