It received critical acclaim, won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, and was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Ryder), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Art Direction. Miriam Margolyes won the Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Mrs. Mingott from BAFTA in 1994. The film grossed $68 million on a $34 million budget.
